As you know I rarely bet in handicaps for sensible reasons, but I was very taken with the recent victories of Berkshire Whisper, one of three runners here for Andrew Balding who won the race last season with the well-supported Fire Demon. Oisin Murphy rides the Dark Angel colt who was second on debut before going one better at Kempton, and then here at Newcastle over course and distance when he was sent clear for a two and a half length success.

All-weather action only this Friday afternoon (not so “good” after all), and my two bets will be out the way bright and early starting with then 1.15pm at Newcastle. This may be over a mile on the Tapeta and not the turf, but I would not be shocked in the slightest if the winner went on to compete at a much higher level – possibly even a classic or two, here or abroad.

Michael van Gerwen is hoping a return to home soil can inspire his revival when the BetMGM Premier League season continues in Rotterdam on Thursday evening. The Rotterdam Ahoy will play host to Night 11 of this year’s roadshow on April 17, as Dutch superstar Van Gerwen prepares to take centre stage. The seven-time Premier League champion is currently outside the Play-Off positions on legs difference, having only progressed to a solitary nightly final across the opening ten weeks.

With heavy rain ruining the going at Newmarket my first bet this afternoon runs at Cheltenham – who would have thought that in mid-April? Willie Mullins still has his eyes on the Trainers’ title and although I remain wary that none of his horses here would have originally been targeted at these races (more of an afterthought), I will still be backing Saint Tartare in the 3.55pm.

At Ripon they are currently expecting good ground (fingers crossed) and that may be ideal for the likes of the Jack Channon trained Last Shamardal, who is looking for his hat-trick after wins over six furlongs at Newcastle and seven furlongs at Wolverhampton. He steps up another furlong today but wasn’t stopping last time out, seeing it out all the way to the line, and as a son of Shaman, there is every reason to hope he will be even better on the grass.
