It’s been a week, and even though I did the work (therapy, talking to friends, etc) a little retail therapy was in order. No, it didn’t solve my problems, but I won’t be complaining when I’m wearing the new pareo I’ve been wanting on our next vacation.Slipping into a new dress or even just opening a box you’ve been waiting for feels pretty nice. It’s not a solution—but it can be a small joy, and sometimes, that’s just what we need.

My kids know I’m a “safety mom.” No popcorn or lollipops before age four. No trampoline parks. I believe in keeping a child in a rear-facing seat until at least four years of age or maxing out weight and height. And my oldest just switched from a five-point harness car seat to a booster at almost seven years-old. Some might call this extreme, but I’m  doing what I know is safest for my kids. That doesn’t feel extreme to me. These rules don’t really get brought up very often—they are just what we do.
