Del Norte Triplicate, which used to be known as The Daily Triplicate, is a semi-daily newspaper released on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. It is located in Crescent City, California. The newspaper is owned by Western Communications, the same company that publishes The Bulletin in Bend, Oregon.

California Dungeness Crab Fishery Closes Off Central Coast

North State Remains Open With RestrictionsThe California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced it will close the commercial and recreational Dungeness crab fisheries using vertical fishing lines south of Pt. Arena at the Sonoma/ Mendocino County border (Zone 3), effective May 1. Commercial crab fishing from Monterey Bay to Morro Bay has been closed since mid-April.
Cal Fire Builds Its Fleet of Aerial Firefighters

Cal Fire has taken a huge step forward in adding a second C-130H Hercules aircraft to its fleet of firefighting tools. This second C-130 is part of what will be a seven member squad of the giant aircraft that will battle fires across the State. The upcoming fire season is expected to be very dry, after an above average rainy Winter. The California Forestry Association applauded this critical milestone in expanding Fire suppression efforts up and down the Golden State.
Harbor Removes Interim, Appoints Harbormaster for Permanent Status

After serving as Interim Harbormaster, Commissioners voted for a five year contract term to the then-former Assistant Harbormaster Michael Rademaker. The Interim accepted the offer, effective May 1. Rademaker will earn $114,000 per year with annual colas (cost of living). The Harbormaster waived the health benefits package in lieu of a housing allowance, within the Harbor district. The personnel matter was handled in Closed Session at the last meeting.
A Bridge to Somewhere

A dangerous bridge over remote Jordan Creek is most definitely a bridge to two remote homes within east RailroadTrail…and it’s certainly precarious. With no guard rails and zero steel support, this bridge, one of two, poses a big problem for Del Norte County, deeded owners of both bridges. Homeowners Rick and Becky Coltra and Jim Harris have been bringing their complaints to the board of supervisors since 2019, to no avail.
Awareness Walk sheds light on murdered and missing indigenous people

More than 50 sign-toting Tribal and non-tribal citizens walked silently through downtown Crescent City at noon, last Monday, bringing attention to the fact that thousands of Indigenous individuals have gone missing or fall victim to foul play, murder and human trafficking. This event sponsored by the Tolowa Dee-ni Nation was the 3rd annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Awareness Walk (MMIP), traversed both sides of the 101.

A half century to do one thing and do it well is quite special. That’s exactly what Mike and Myrna Finley did at the Hiouchi Hamlet for decades. July 13, 1975, Mike and Myrna assumed control of the Hamlet. Folks in Del Norte might remember Del Norte High School Senior Mike Finley pumping gas at the Furtado Shell Station on 2nd Street back in 1964. Now, Mike and Myrna are real seniors, again. Mike began his career at the McKay markets and a decade later, Mike and Myrna took over the Hiouchi Hamlet.
Assembly Member Meets His Supporters at Paragon Coffeehouse

Assemblymember Chris Rogers(D-CA2) paid a visit to Crescent City, Wednesday. ASM Rogers greeted supporters at the Paragon Coffeehouse, from 11-1pm, with a changing and revolving audience of about 20 folks who asked questions and made Rogers aware of their concerns. Rogers prevailed over local School Board Trustee Michael Greer over the five county district, last, November.
True North Updates Status on Micro Village

The True North Organizing Network of Eureka hosted a Town Hall on Housing, last Tuesday at the Veterans Hall, in Crescent City. About 60 folks showed up to learn updates on housing the homeless in Del Norte. At the panel table included members the Board of Supervisors, Department of Health and Human Services staff and the Del Norte Sheriff’s Office. The first Agenda item called for an update on the County-owned Legacy, now established as Permanent Supportive Housing(PSH).
City Going Underground

The City has adopted Ordinance 854 amending City aesthetics and placing utilities in a special district, underground on Frontand K Streets. The Ordinance is timely as credits from both the City and County will expire June 8, 2025 per the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). Rule 20 was established in 1967 by the CPUC allowing local governments to improve the aesthetics of the community.
County’s Number Two Arrested for Alleged Felony DUI

Randolph (Randy) Hooper of Crescent City, age 44, was arrested on alleged felony driving under the influence hit and run incident over the weekend. Hooper is the Assistant Chief Administrative Officer for Del Norte County. The CHP made the arrest on early April 20 Easter Sunday morning shortly after midnight, on Hwy 101. The felony is VC 2001 Hit and Run involving a death or injury. The injury is reportedly minor. Suspect blew a .08 alcohol level according to CHP report.
