FOREST CITY—Rutherford Opportunity Center students often have unique challenges with lives filled with instability. With a looming budget shortfall, the future of the school is also uncertain. Principal Darci Rich is concerned about the students, as well as her staff, as the school appears to be on the verge of being permanently closed. The Rutherford board of education began the process to close the school, at its June 3 meeting.

Bostic — The East Rutherford Junior American Legion Cavaliers outlasted a late comeback from South Caldwell’s second team to take a 4-3 win Wednesday. The Cavaliers took the opportunity against the younger and less experienced Spartans team to shake things up defensively. Catcher Eli Roof played in the outfield, and four Cavalier pitchers took the mound, including some who are not used to pitching in close games.

FOREST CITY — On one of the hottest days of the year, kids got the chance to cool off before Tuesday’s noon Forest City Owls game. The exhibition matinee with the Catawba Valley Stars was dubbed “Splash Day” at McNair Field and featured many water activities for summer camps attending the game. Owls players and staff joined in on the fun as well, ascending into the stands throughout the game to spray the crowd with water guns.

SPINDALE—“No Kings” rallies, or protests, were held across the United States on Saturday in big cities, and small towns including Spindale and Rutherfordton. The big city events had tens of thousands of protesters, and the two local events had more than 500 participants combined. The Spindale event, with over 300 participants, was the sixth organized by Shannon Sims, of Foothills For Justice, to protest the policies and practices of the Trump Administration.
