It was started as a blog by Egyptian journalist Mohamed Khairat in July 2012 and evolved into a full-fledged media company in March 2014. The site asserts that it is the leading English-language news source in Egypt, based on its audience reach. In February 2015, the website attracted over 800,000 visitors.
