E.A. Bailey established The Mercury as its first owner and publisher during the summer of 1903, the same year the Wright brothers embarked on their journey toward powered flight. In 1905, Donald Dunbar acquired The Mercury as the town began to develop a more lasting presence. The original Mercury building was situated on the north side of Fourth Street. It later relocated to 12th Avenue North and eventually moved further south on 12th Avenue, directly behind the current CIBC bank. One of the early Mercury buildings was lost to a fire during its initial years.
