    Fort Macleod’s charity volleyball tournament set a fund-raising record last month. The STARS coed tournament raised a record $28,000 for the air ambulance. “It was a great tournament,” said Mike Bourassa, tournament founder and president of the Fort Macleod Volleyball Club. Bourassa said Thursday STARS will receive a $25,000 donation on Wednesday, May 21, enough to fund four missions by the air ambulance.

    Nony and David Orr fulfilled one of their goals through an 18-month humanitarian mission in Zimbabwe. The Fort Macleod couple told an audience of about 30 people Wednesday about their time helping to build schools and clinics and drill water wells in the African country. “This was one of the hardest things we’ve ever done,” David Orr told the people gathered in council chambers in the G.R. Davis Administration Building.

    The F.P. Walshe Flyers battled hard in a weekend high school girls sevens tournament at the Lethbridge Rugby Club. The Flyers opened the tournament Saturday morning against the powerful Raymond Comets, losing 34-12. Addy Nelson scored a try and booted the convert for F.P. Walshe and Riley Stedman also scored a try. In their second game of the tournament on Saturday afternoon, the Flyers fell 20-12 to Matthew Halton Hawks from Pincher Creek.

    Southwest United lost two of three games Saturday in a high school boys sevens tournament at Lethbridge Rugby Club. United beat Chinook Coyotes but lost to County Central Hawks and Catholic Central Cougars. Southwest United is based in Fort Macleod but includes players from F.P. Walshe, Willow Creek Composite in Claresholm, Livingstone school in Lundbreck and Matthew Halton school in Pincher Creek.

    Voters in the Foothills riding opted for the status quo Monday, electing Conservative incumbent John Barlow. “It is an absolute honour to represent you,” Barlow said, thanking his supporters. “The national results are obviously not what we hoped for, but I know we will roll up our sleeves and get to work for what is best for Canada.”Canada also chose the status quo, electing a Liberal minority government with 168 seats in Parliament compared to 144 for the Conservatives.
