A Tale of Two Provinces: Economic and Fiscal Performance of Ontario and Quebec in the 21st Century is a new study that finds Ontario’s economic and fiscal performance over the past two decades has been comparatively weak and noticeably worse than neighbouring Quebec, as Ontario’s GDP-per-person in 2000 was the 2nd highest across the country before falling to 5th in 2022.

Canada Post wants to increase the price of a stamp by 25 cents to $1.24 to keep up with inflation and rising costs. But Canada Post has often relied on this reasoning for previous price increases since it stopped being a government department and became a Crown corporation in 1981. Since then, it’s jacked up prices every time it’s had “financial difficulties.”The source of these difficulties has changed over time.

And while bus companies in these provinces already receive millions in subsidies from taxpayers, advocates are now calling for even more. But this is the wrong route to follow. Subsidies often incentivize bad “cost control” behaviours by firms as they slack on managerial efficiency.
