The current exhibit at the Locust Valley Library features the work of hobbiest Tom Rizzuto, who learned how to build models as a youngster and has returned to it, to share with others. Tom Rizzuto was a young boy of 10, when he first started learning how to build models. His uncle taught him how to work on plastic models, particularly models of monsters like Dracula and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. He remembers doing well on his first model, “except for the paint job”, he said.

A highlight of the July 19 Locust Valley Garden Club meeting was the induction of Irene Duque. Member Nancy Capobianco introduced Irene, saying they had worked together and, she was always willing to make a Halloween costume for us. “She is a great crafter,” In anticipation to the August program, a Pressed Flower workshop, Irene showed an antique silver frame with pressed dried ferns in the center.

The Locust Valley Library honored Decoration Day with a display of Civil War military miniatures, thanks to the Locust Valley Garden Club, which curates the showcase. It will remain on view throughout July. The collection belongs to the library’s own Bill Finlayson, who is a lifelong Civil War historian. What we now know as Memorial Day began spontaneously after the Civil War, as widows and orphans decorated the graves of the fallen soldiers with flowers and flags each May.
