Last Friday, we embarked on a marathon 200-mile food tour through Derbyshire, and our second stop was at 100-year-old Owen Taylor & Sons Butchers in the suburban village of Leabrooks. This family-run butchery has been serving the community for over a century and stands out as one of the region’s most entrepreneurial food businesses.

Tucked away off the A606 between Melton Mowbray and Oakham, Northfield Farm Shop & Butchery is the epitome of a hidden gem. If you don’t know it’s there, you’ll drive right past — but missing it would be a foodie crime! With its outstanding quality, it’s no surprise the late Clarissa Dickson Wright counted it among her favourite producers. We visited Northfield Farm yesterday to drop off some 2025 Great Food Club Handbooks and were reminded once again why this place is so special.

If you’re searching for a brilliant artisan bakery and a unique place in Nottingham, look no further than Coosh Microbakery in Mapperley. Founded in August 2022 by Rachel (pictured below) and her husband Tom, this artisan bakery has quickly become a favourite for its exceptional baked goods and community focus. Coosh’s offerings are as tempting as they are delicious. On our recent visit, we couldn’t resist their gooey brownie, Marmite swirl and focaccia – all of which were outstanding.
