When well-meaning high school teachers, college counselors, and parents ask teens what they want to do when they grow up, it can land like a loaded and impossible question. Unless the child has some special insight into the career path they desire, it often takes college, internships, technical training, life experience, guidance, and information to truly figure out what path will be both feasible and something they’re passionate about — and, ideally, help them find purpose in their career path.

Data science is in the news a lot lately. While other countries are teaching data science skills starting in elementary school, U.S. schools are slowly introducing data science electives in high school. Meanwhile, data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics shows that careers in data science are booming with a current median wage of $108,020 and projected growth of 36 percent from 2023 to 2033.

Did you know that nearly a quarter of all U.S. job postings require at least some data science skills? And in the future, these skills are projected to be in even higher demand. Whether or not your child’s school is actively teaching data literacy, data science, or data science skills, you can help your child by introducing these important concepts at home. These data science activities are basically fun learning games. Check them out with your child.
