As readers of this newsletter know, last month I talked to Asa Akira, who put me onto the life-changing magic of NAD+ therapy. She claimed it helped her husband deal with his chronic pain and helped her get out of the fog of her low-grade depression. NAD stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, which is a coenzyme found in all our cells that helps with DNA repair, cell signaling, and greasing the skids of our metabolic pathways. It’s essentially a do-it-all helper molecule.

It’s been a bit of a rough go recently at HEAVIES HQ. Last week, my wife and I got walloped by a severe bout of food poisoning that put us out of commission for a full 48 hours. Dehydration, night sweats, the works; the wedding dress scene in Bridesmaids has a new valance for us. We suspect the culprit was a pack of broccoli we’d learn later was recalled for listeria concerns, since it was the only thing on our dinner plates that our toddler didn’t touch—and he was fine! A real ball of energy.

This free, non-paywalled edition of HEAVIES is once again brought to you by CAVA, one of the few bowl places I genuinely LOVE. The thing I appreciate about CAVA is it always hits—particularly the Spicy Lamb + Avocado, which I get with rice instead of lentils. To my mind there's no better way to hit my macros. HEAVIES is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Welcome to the HEAVIES Feelgood Routine, a series that talks to cool, interesting, and creative people about how they design their busy schedules to accommodate good habits. Every friend group has that one open-minded homie who’s down to try anything. And last year, when I was asking around for ideas on who I should feature in the newsletter, more than a few people were like: Yo… you need to talk to Asa.

I have a new feature out in New York Magazine today called Big Food Gets Jacked: How Protein Took Over the American Grocery Store. The story was a bit all consuming, which is why things have been a little quiet here on the newsletter, but now that this thing is finished it’s back to your regularly scheduled programming. All my thanks to my terrific editor Joy Shan and excellent fact-checker Jack Denton for all their sturdy, muscular guidance on this.
