We are delighted to announce the release of The Tramways of Glasgow 1956 by Henry Conn – the latest addition to our acclaimed series celebrating the wonderful views of David and John Clarke. In 1956, a decision was made to reduce and eventually abandon the city’s entire tram system. With the exception of a few routes, services were cut back to the city boundary, ending long-standing inter-urban connections to Barrhead, Paisley, Renfrew, Milngavie, Coatbridge, and Airdrie.

Chesterfield will commemorate its role in the birth of the world’s railway system and connection to George Stephenson thanks to a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The Derbyshire town’s Holy Trinity Church has been awarded £240,600 to launch a project honouring George Stephenson, the ‘Father of Railways’, who lived the last 10 years of his life in Chesterfield and is buried in the church.

Train manufacturer Alstom will open its factory to the public for the first time to host the UK’s largest gathering of historic railway vehicles this summer. The Greatest Gathering event between August 1 and 3 will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the world’s first passenger train service. The National Railway Museum has celebrated the achievements of one of its longest-serving volunteers as he retires after 49 years. After volunteering at the museum since its opening in 1975, David Eastoe has retired after 49 years of service. One of David’s first duties was to clean and prepare the Flying Scotsman in preparation for the arrival of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who officially opened the museum in September 1975.
