    Being sensitive is often unfairly stigmatized and misunderstood. If you’ve ever heard the phrase, “Stop being so sensitive!” or “It’s not that bad,” then you’ve experienced this stigma. However, in our book, Sensitive, which I co-authored with Andre Sólo, we argue that sensitivity is a strength and an advantage in life. In our book, we identify five gifts of sensitivity: empathy, creativity, sensory intelligence, depth of processing, and depth of emotion.

    Growing up as a sensitive kid, I never got the impression that my sensitivity was a strength. In fact, I was told the opposite: You gotta get over it, you’re too sensitive, you gotta be tough. The adults who told said these things believed them. They thought they were helping me by getting me ready for the “real world.” Sensitivity, they figured, would hold me back. This bias is so deeply rooted that even the scientists who first studied sensitivity assumed it was a drawback.

    I’ve had a lifetime of denying myself. Growing up as a very spiritual kid, I found my way to a strict interpretation of religion by age ten. I believed obedience was the only path to holiness, to the point that I abandoned my own needs. The journey to be kinder and gentler with myself has been harrowing. As I’ve grown in understanding myself as a highly sensitive person, I see all the ways I berated my sensitivities in the name of holiness.
