The newspaper is produced by Forward Times Publishing Company, which also has other publications like the Daily Cougar. Since 2014, FT has been recognized as one of the few black newspapers that still prints itself.

    The City of Houston recently lost another historical icon, as Milton C. Alford, the first Black firefighter in the history of the Houston Fire Department, passed away at the age of 97. Alford was hired by the Houston Fire Department in 1955, becoming one of ten Black firefighters in an inaugural class that helped officially integrate the fire department. Alford was hired as a member of the Houston Fire Department on March 4, 1955, during the administration of then-Mayor Roy Hofheinz.
