    Huddersfield MP Harpreet Uppal has issued a call to action over knife crime following the tragic death of a 16-year-old which shocked the town. Ahmad Mamdouh Al Ibrahim, who had fled war-torn Syria and wanted to become a doctor, was stabbed in the neck in Ramsden Street in Huddersfield town centre on April 3. He died later in hospital. Funeral prayers were said at a Birkby mosque and, it is understood, his body has been flown back to his Syrian homeland.

    Hats off to theatre staff at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary who are cutting waste and going ‘green.’The Breast Theatre Team, led by their ‘green champions’ – staff nurses Ezrah Limsiaco and Tracy Farrington – have disposed of disposables and have introduced reusable hats instead. Each member of the team has been given a hat that they change and wash daily, and some staff have bought some more of their own.

    Three generations of the same family have opened a new boutique vineyard in Meltham with the aim of it becoming a tourist destination for wine lovers. Helme Edge Vineyard has been established by Alan Calder, his daughter Fiona Smith and her son Tom Smith. Set over 3.2 acres of land, the vineyard will host tours and wine tasting events in a new purpose-built tasting building which looks down towards the conservation village of Helme and a wider vista of the Pennines.

    A group of players from Beaumont Park Ukulele Group entertained residents and staff at Southfield Court Care Home in Almondbury, playing a variety of songs and instrumental pieces. The items played included Country Roads, Leaving on a Jet Plane and Karma Chameleon. Residents sang along with Keep the Home Fires Burning and It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, which will be performed as part of the VE day celebrations at the Holmfirth Folk Festival Ukulele Jamboree in May.
