I came for a cocktail, but I drank the bubbly. Finding a proper wine bar in any town with a beach is a wanting proposition. If you go to somewhere like Dubrovnik, I can’t emphasize enough to not drink anywhere inside the Old Town and honestly, get out of the Old Town because it’s Do Not Pass Go Territory. If you’re in say, Alicante on the coast of Valencia, Spain, you’ll find a few options, but nothing terribly great.
A wine writer needs a wine education

My good friend and well-respected drinks writer, Henry Jeffreys recently wrote an engaging post titled, “Do wine writers need qualifications?”It rightly gained a great deal of attention given that both the “writing” and “education” aspects of wine are hotly-discussed amongst winedrinkers.

It goes without saying that the Mediterranean Sea is a tremendously large body of water. As it spans some 3,700km, forming the southern boundary of what we define as “Europe”, its waters shimmer with undulations of blue and green, lapping along beaches that are stony and rugged more often than sandy and soft. Every year millions flock to these shores to bathe in a sun that has allowed humanity to grow plentiful crops over the millennia ranging from wheat to olives to grapes.

by | Back in 2019, Master of Wine, Yiannis Karakasis did something that many others have done in the past, he started a wine competition. He did things very, very differently though. First, it was just for Greek wines. Secondly, the competition didn’t accept wine submissions, but instead bought all the wines tasted from retail outlets. Third, no points were given as it was initially a selection of “50 Great Greek Wines”.
The wines of Aragón 2025

It was time to revisit the fine wines being produced in the region of Aragón which sits between Catalunya and Navarra/Rioja with both Castillas on its western flank and Valencia on its east. With higher altitude and a wealth of old-vine Grenache vineyards, it’s a unique place overall, but there’s admittedly a good deal of difference between what’s found in say, DO Somontano versus DO Calatayud.

The following wines were tasted as part of a showcase dinner during a week in Croatia for a future report on those wines. These two wineries from the village of Ljubuški, Škegro & Milas presented a series of wines that were both current releases as well as some from their archive. All the wines showcased what it is that winemkers in the south of Bosnia & Herzegovina do best which is, working with the local varieties.

Curiously, when I started to taste the wines of Domaine de Piéblanc in Gigondas last week, I was initially asked if I’d be interested in tasting some wines from Burgundy? Specifically what was being offered were the three white Chardonnays from Mâcon that are produced by Domaine des Crêts. Naturally I said yes as after a week of tasting hearty blends of Southern Rhône to the tune of about 500 samples, a change up to the high-acidity wines of Burgundy was a welcome change.

At the end of tasting nearly 50 wines for this, the latest Corpinnat report. Ramon Jané of Mas Candí asked, “So tell me, what’s the opinion of Corpinnat out there in the wine world?” Having spent the morning tasting with a beautiful view out the window in their new cellar, I thought, it’s more than a valid question and it’s core to the existence of this “un-Denominated Denomination of Origin” in the region of Penedès.

For those who may not know of this winery, Stobi is one of the biggest and more commercially important wineries in North Macedonia. They’re only about 80km from the capital, Skopje, but their situation is right in the prime grape growing region of Tikveš.
