Founded in 2010 by Miquel Hudin, a wine writer and judge originally from California, the site is now based in the beautiful Priorat region of Catalunya, Spain. by | There is nothing that’s static in the wine world. Thankfully this means that something which changed in Roussillon, was the weather. After several years of extreme drought which were exacerbated by the fact you can’t irrigate in France, 2025 has finally seen good rain fall. The only catch is that it’s been rather early and as to whether it will be sufficient for the wines to make it to harvest remains to be seen.

by | Château Musar is no stranger here and for good reason as they’re essentially the epitome of fine wine from Lebanon and they’ve a very unique style all their own. They’re able to blend Bordeaux and Mediterranean grapes in a manner that few ever pull off. Indeed, you may encounter one or two back in France, but it’s just such a “thing” when it comes to Musar.

I’m going to state which is obvious once you think about it in that any quality sparkling wine region in the world has to start with a ‘C’. No C, no quality. You think I’m joking? Look at France, there’s Champagne (obviously) and then eight of those ‘Crémant de’ things. You may argue that not all the Crémants are amazing which is fair, but they’re all French and thus they get a pass. Why does pèt-nat suck? Because it doesn’t start with a ‘C’, obviously.
Same River Twice, Southern France

Shortly after completing the Domaine des Crêts coverage, I was contacted by James Dunstan of Same River Twice to taste what they’re producing in the general Ventoux region of Southern Rhône. After a lengthy wine career spanning many different countries including Japan, Dunstan came back to his childhood memories of holidays in the Ventoux region to start producing the wines that he wanted. The focus is on lower alcohol, but as shown by the selection, there’s definitely no sacrifice of flavor.
A book review of, “Mallorca & Wine”

About two years ago, a colleague of mine tried roping me into writing a book on the wines of Mallorca. I was all for it as Mallorca is gorgeous and there are some really interesting varieties and producers there. In the end, it didn’t really get off the ground and instead I ended up writing this report. In many ways that was a rather good turn of events as it turns out this book, Mallorca & Wine was being written and ultimately released in 2024.
Hail destroys large portion of vineyards in Jumilla

On the 10th of May, a massive hailstorm ripped through the Jumilla wine region, a ‘super autonomous’ denomination of origin in Spain spanning both Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia. In a short period of time, hail of up to 2cm in width pelted the region, stripping leaves as well the new spring shoots on the vines. While new shoots may emerge, given the timing, most believe that of all of the harvest in the affected plants has been lost.
Twitter/X officially the worst social media for wine

For some time it’s generally seemed that Twitter has been a poor match for the wine world due to a myriad of reasons. But, according to a recent survey of 150 Catalan wineries by Enodata that was supported by INCAVI (the Catalan wine authority), Twitter is dead last in terms of usage by wineries and has been referred as very a “very bad” experience in general, thus confirming what has largely been assumed to date. On a scale of one to five, Twitter scored a 2.15.

Perelada’s ‘Cinc Capes’

The wines below were tasted as one of the many excellent presentations during the 1st Mediterranean Wine Symposium. Leading the tasting was Delfí Sanahuja, the head of winemaking for Perelada the winery who also happened to be the instigator and host of the event. The idea here was to showcase the cinc capes or “five layers” of wine in the Mediterranean which were: Climate, Soil, Variety, Territory, and Human Factor.
