Hung Up

Hung Up is a fresh weekly newsletter created by Hunter Harris. With four years of experience at Vulture covering movies, music, and pop culture, I've had some memorable moments, like visiting a cat cafe with Jason Derulo. I've also written profiles on stars such as Haim, Charlie Puth, Keke Palmer, and Sharon Stone. From ranking the male characters in Insecure to getting excited about the drama surrounding the upcoming Avatar sequels, my journey has been diverse. Hung Up features a mix of essays, interviews, recommendations, reviews, gossip, memorable quotes, heartfelt notes, and all sorts of interesting content.

More from Hung Up this week: A Love Island USA chat in the Substack app … A father present in the movie theater but not the home … What’s the best story you tell about yourself? You’re never going to believe this, but I was at a weddinglast week. (I know, I know: Likely place for me to be.) I’m still finishing up something about Materialists, so I pulled up something fun and weird from the archives: Do you remember Anthony Hopkins’s thotty headshot? That make it do what it do squint?

More from Hung Up this week: A little London event innit … a chat about the US Traitors season 4 cast in the Substack app … and What’s the story you tell about yourself? At church one Sunday in my youth, the pastor shared an anecdote that I think about all the time. You know what day the telephone company says the phone lines are the busiest, all over the country? he asked the congregation of about 500-plus black folks.

Really did not expect my London event on Thursday to hit capacity in 5 minutes โ€ฆ! I will try to open up some more spots!A shake-the-table moment of my early twenties was reading Carrie Fisherโ€™s Star Wars diary. Fisher was young, hard-headed, and having a clandestine affair with an irresistibly aloof Harrison Ford. Someone told her that who you choose to be in a relationship with is what you think of yourself.

Londoners! Can I pull you for a chat? I’m in town this week and want to hang out with you. Thursday night I’m hosting a little get-together in Dalston at 7pm. The vibe: Informal! Free drinks! Good gossip! Bring your best friend, or your work friend, or someone willing to get into a passionate debate about whether The Bear is a comedy or if Hacks is good. Hope to see you Thursday night! I’ll be there at 7pm and I’ll close my tab around 930.

More from Hung Up this week: Patti LuPone apologizes to everyone but Glenn Close and a Mountainhead chat in the Substack app. If a man has not embarrassed you, devoted Hung Up readers will recall, he just hasn’t embarrassed you yet. Generally, that applies to “wives,” “daughters,” “girlfriends,” and “mothers.” This week a novel development: men are embarrassing one another. Several male friendships have fallen out in spectacular fashion this week.
