I first encountered Hallie’s work about a decade ago on Instagram. Or maybe I was tipped off by the writer and ceramicist , a longtime friend of Hallie’s, whom I met a long time ago in the wild world of online food writing and whose tastes in food, literature, and friendship are impeccable.

    But at no point did I think of myself as having an agenda that could be called political. Rather, my agenda, to the extent that it can even be called that, has always been to speak as honestly as possible to my own experience of negotiating and navigating a life as myself, as a self — multifarious, restless, necessarily ever changing as the many factors of merely being also change — in a world of selves.

    Why are you so angry? My husband frequently asked me why I was so much angrier than other women. It always made me smile. I was exactly as angry as every other woman I knew.     First:If you’re heartsick at the images of wildfire devastation in the Los Angeles area, I found this LA Times article to be helpful, with its concise list of where, how, and why to donate. But I try to remember, too, that donating to nonprofits isn’t the only way to help from afar; we can also send money directly to friends, family, and even acquaintances who are affected.
