Being digitally literate is not just about knowing how to use programs or being aware of copyright law. It’s also about being able to ask the right questions. This is another reason to have a news section in your Computing lessons, in addition to the 5 reasons to have a Computing news section of your lessons I wrote about previously: having a news section gives pupils the opportunity to practise asking pertinent questions.

There are some great books for primary (elementary) school pupils and also for secondary (high) school students. You might think an author visit wouldn’t be of much use in a subject like Computing, but you’d be mistaken. You could ask a visiting children's author to simply read a passage from their latest book and answer some questions - or you could think a bit bigger. Planned well, a good author visit can enhance what you're currently doing in the classroom.

Sometimes (often), 'good enough' is better than 'ideal'. Yes, it sounds paradoxical, and counterintuitive, but sometimes even the presumed ‘ideal’ is not, erm, ideal. Let me explain. At one school I worked at as Head of ICT and Computing, there were three computer rooms. Two were fully equipped, and the third was full of old mini computers. It was like walking onto the half-constructed set of the UFO TV series, which I think had been made in the 1970s.

In fact, Paul-Choudhury is more concerned with examining the widest possible range of areas in which optimism – or the absence of it – can make a difference. Thus, he touches on psychology, biology and physics (in keeping his professional background in astrophysics), as well as science fiction, economics, politics, history, philosophy and literature.
