Ikemura first moved to Europe in the 1970s. She studied Spanish Literature in Sevilla before becoming interested in sculpture, which eventually led her to study at the city’s Academy of Fine Arts. Her path subsequently took her from Spain to Switzerland and Germany—first Cologne, then Berlin. During our conversation with the artist, we therefore also delve into the topic of language, which, given her background and fluency in four tongues, is of great importance for Ikemura.

Next to the atelier, one finds the Katine, a casual, canteen-inspired restaurant that offers a regularly changing menu of modern dishes and drinks. “I have always dreamed of having an atelier with a restaurant connected to it. I believe that art and food complement each other and this region here, close to Alsace, has a particularly rich culinary tradition.” The interior of the canteen, designed by architects Glatz&Glatz, features peach-colored nuances across the walls, floor, and furniture.

Calling attention to the value of artisanal traditions and lost handmade production techniques was high on Vanessa’s object selection criteria. “While it’s now called ‘collectible design,’ the concept of furniture design has, of course, been around for a long time,” she remarks. “The recent craftsmanship revival has produced stunning pieces that highlight traditional skills.” She emphasizes Eichkorn, a Black Forest-based atelier devoted to reviving traditional craft through a contemporary lens.
