In a previous post, we described a CSTR and a PID controller. This post will cover the code and architecture of the digital twin from this project repo. The project leverages Kafka for data streaming, Faust for data processing, InfluxDB for storing the time series data, and Telegraf for writing data from the topic to InfluxDB. We’ll also cover the advantages and disadvantages of this stack. The corresponding repo for this blog post can be found here.

In the fast-evolving chemical industry, maintaining precise control over Chemical reactors like a continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTRs) is paramount to ensuring optimal performance and product quality. This blog post delves into integrating advanced data tools and techniques to achieve this control. We’ll explore how to leverage InfluxDB, Kafka, and Faust streaming, along with Telegraf, to effectively model and manage a CSTR and its PID controller (Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller).

Any existing InfluxDB user will notice that InfluxDB underwent a transformation with the release of InfluxDB 3.0. InfluxDB v3 provides 45x better write throughput and has 5-25x faster queries compared to previous versions of InfluxDB (see this post for more performance benchmarks). ETL with InfluxDBWe also deprioritized several features that existed in 2.x to focus on interoperability with existing tools. The task engine is one of the deprioritized features that existed in InfluxDB v2.

This article coins the term “FDAP stack”, explains why we used it to build InfluxDB 3.0, and argues that it will enable and power a generation of analytics applications in the same way that the LAMP stack enabled and powered a generation of interactive websites (by the way we are hiring!). BackgroundWhen he announced the InfluxDB IOx project, InfluxData founder Paul Dix effectively bet that the FDAP stack would form the future foundation of analytic systems.
