A NSW-based company running a petrol station in Carlton has been fined $5928 for failing to show it was obeying an environmental notice from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Victoria. The notice followed an inspection by EPA officers who found problems with contaminated soil, groundwater and escaping fuel vapour at the site on the corner of Nicholson St and Alexandra Pde.

Residents of East Melbourne have stepped up their campaign to stop the Victorian Police Association from securing a planning permit that would see the operating hours extended for their newly-constructed rooftop bar on Jolimont St.The planning permit application, which was rejected by the City of Melbourne in December last year, would have allowed the premises to operate until 2am indoors and 11pm outdoors on Friday and Saturday nights, with a capacity of 320 people using the space.

The City of Melbourne will be bringing back a scaled-down version of Lord Mayor Nick Reece’s election promise to make swimming pool entry more affordable across the city, following a successful trial of the initiative. Cr Reece had initially promised throughout his campaign to provide $2 pool entry and 50,000 free beginner swimming lessons. However, at the meeting on March 18, the council voted to provide 3000 free swimming lessons and limit $2 pool entry to weekdays throughout the 2025–26 summer.

Plans for increased greening and tree canopy in four inner-city suburbs have been adopted by the City of Melbourne despite some councillors opposing them due to concerns surrounding the potential loss of car parking. Seven councillors voted in favour of adopting final Urban Forest Precinct Plans for the CBD, East Melbourne, Carlton and South Yarra at the March 18 Future Committee meeting, which set out 10-year plans for street tree planting.
