The inaugural edition of Inner City News hit the stands in February 2021. This local newspaper was created specifically for the neighborhoods of East Melbourne, Carlton, and Parkville.     With great interest we noted the Lord Mayor’s comments about East Melbourne and the need for greater speed restrictions. For many years we have pushed for the speed limits in Parkville to be reduced to 30kph stopping the “rat runners” racing through, particularly along Park Drive. While there is a traffic survey about to commence in Parkville this is urgent. There is talk of more pedestrian crossings and speed humps, however, the biggest issue is the speeding cars.

    East Melbourne residents are urging the City of Melbourne not to proceed with the installation of new road safety measures, describing them as “unnecessary” and a poor use of government funds. The council has proposed installing four zebra crossings and several speed humps along Powlett St, as well as one at the intersection of Simpson and George streets.

    The Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre will celebrate its 10th anniversary this June, with the legacy of of Miss Syme continuing to loom large over the city. To mark the occasion, on Saturday, June 21, the City of Melbourne will host a celebratory event featuring music, interactive drumming workshops, face painting, and other children’s activities.

    Stage Two of University Square is on track for delivery, with the City of Melbourne allocating funds to the project in its draft budget and progressing with the closure of Barry and Leicester streets in Carlton. The council initially endorsed the original master plan for University Square in 2016 to support park expansion and improvements. Stage One works were completed in 2019.
