The Institute for War & Peace Reporting, commonly known as IWPR, is a non-profit organization that operates independently. Its mission is to foster positive change in areas affected by conflict, authoritarian regimes, and nations undergoing transformation. With main offices located in the United States and the Netherlands, IWPR's global headquarters is based in London. The organization focuses on empowering local journalists, citizen reporters, and activists in regions facing turmoil. IWPR provides training, mentorship, and platforms for both professional and citizen journalists, while also strengthening the capabilities of media and civic organizations. Additionally, it collaborates with various partners to eliminate obstacles to free speech, encourage public dialogue, and promote citizen participation. IWPR has a presence in over 30 countries, implementing programs in regions such as Afghanistan, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Iraq, the Balkans, Sudan, and Uganda.

Stanley Kafuko, a member of Uganda’s opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) was arrested on December 30, 2020, while campaigning with party leader Bobi Wine. Kafuko was one of 128 NUP members seized the same day, amid mass arrests targeting opposition activists in the run-up to Uganda’s hotly-contested presidential election of 2021 – in which President Yoweri Museveni held on to power. While in detention, Kafuko told IWPR, he was sexually assaulted by men he believes were intelligence agents.
