The newest update to the Catamount model, the Brooks Catamount 4 ($170), comes with two millimeters of additional stack height and updates to its midsole materials and mesh upper. Its claimed weight of 9.5 ounces (269 grams) for a U.S. men’s 9 keeps this trail running shoe reasonably lightweight. Finally, its 6-millimeter drop (now based on a claimed 34-millimeter total stack height at the heel) and 3.5-millimeter lug depth are unchanged from previous iterations.

The Hoka Clifton 10 ($150) is the brand-new version of one of the most popular running shoe models currently available, and for good reason. It’s a neutral shoe with a reasonable weight and moderate drop. There’s something to be said about a pair of shoes you can throw on your feet and forget about. I call them comfort shoes. Last February, I had the opportunity to provide race support for four athletes I coach at the Rocky Raccoon 100 Mile in Huntsville, Texas. Rocky Raccoon is an early season ultramarathon with a reputation for being one of the “easier” 100-mile races on the circuit. As a result, many runners come to Huntsville each February seeking a sub-24-hour 100 miler, a Western States 100 qualifier, or a solid training race in advance of their primary goal later in the season.

Racing versus adventure running: This is a long-debated topic among many trail runners and one where I’ve struggled to find where my heart is happiest. Racing can be fun and motivating — training for a set goal you commit to by signing up and putting some money down. But sometimes racing lacks the creativity and adventure of dreaming up your own route, through a landscape that inspires you, and putting in the groundwork yourself to create your own adventure.
