    As we all re-discovered this week, life is full of surprises, some of them exceedingly unpleasant. In this period of extreme volatility, it’s becoming much more difficult to forecast even the near future with any real confidence, let alone the medium term and beyond. That continues to apply with particular force to artificial intelligence, which we’ve recently learned you can use to create an AI avatar and invite it to take part in a Zoom call. Fun times.

    I’ll explain the title at the end. I don’t know how crippled and compromised your country’s civil justice system has become, but in my neck of the woods at least, it’s ugly. A feature article last month in Canada’s Globe and Mail went into excruciating detail about the “unbearable” state of a civil justice system in which the trial process can easily stretch four to five years.

    I fractured my toe the other day. Stupidly, as is usually the case with minor injuries — I accidentally kicked the leg of a bathroom cabinet and cracked the little toe on my right foot. I’d never broken a bone before, which is the sort of thing that can be true when you lead a highly sedentary and risk-averse lifestyle. Two days after the injury, I went to see a chiropractor I sometimes use, who diagnosed the break.

    I have regrets. Not too many, thankfully, and none that would generate much outside interest — I’m not exactly leading the glamorous life over here. But one regret I do have involves this Substack — specifically, a post from last summer about the tensions and complications many law firms are experiencing from generational differences and divides. Apparently, it’s the most-read of my 50 posts here so far.

    This past spring, word emerged that some large US law firms were “jumping the gun” on traditional law school recruitment. Rather than waiting for on-campus interviews and other open-access opportunities to meet potential new recruits, these firms are directly hiring from the ranks of brand-new students. “Firms have now shifted recruiting to their own online platforms and encourage students to apply ahead of their schools’ OCI,” reported Bloomberg Law.
