The Kalona News made its debut on November 19, 1891, and remains the longest-running business in Kalona. It was established by Emma Allen Dunlap, who laid down a guiding principle for the publication that persists to this day: “With a strong faith in the town and its future, we will strive to serve the interests of Kalona and the neighboring areas, and we hope that your support will help us create a top-notch local newspaper. A high-quality paper is a great asset to a community.”

WELLMANKale Miller started Mid-Prairie’s goal-scoring party in the seventh minute. Fighting off a Monticello defender, Miller booted the ball into the net as he went down. The goal started the Golden Hawks toward a 3-0 win last Monday, their first of the season and their first shutout win since blanking Sigourney Keota in the first round of the 2024 1A tournament. Mid-Prairie added two more goals in the second half and finish off the victory.

Brooklyn Schneider scored the first three goals of her high school career Monday and the Golden Hawks drilled Monticello 6-1 for their third consecutive win. Mid-Prairie has outscored three opponents 16-2 in the last week. The Golden Hawks (3-2-1) go after their fourth straight win Thursday at Cedar Valley Christian (1-1), then return home next Monday to face West Branch in Wellman.

RIVERSIDEA proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget that includes $5.1 million in spending and more than $950,000 in local property tax revenue was presented to the Riverside City Council at its regularly scheduled meeting April 7. The Council set a public hearing for April 21, after which it is expected to adopt the budget, which would become effective July 1. A public hearing was held Monday for the proposed tax levy rate, which has been set at $8.10 per $1,000 of assessed property.
