Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting

The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting (KyCIR) is an independent, nonprofit newsroom located in Louisville, Kentucky. We focus on investigative journalism that impacts individuals, neighborhoods, and the state as a whole. Our goal is to safeguard the rights of society's most vulnerable groups, bring to light misconduct in both public and private sectors, enhance government transparency, and hold those in power accountable. We are dedicated to uncovering the truth without bias, cutting through bureaucratic obstacles, and encouraging public dialogue. KyCIR shines a light on important issues that often go unnoticed, ensuring they receive the attention they deserve. This initiative was launched by Louisville Public Media, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that operates three public radio stations, including 89.3 WFPL News, which is a full-time NPR affiliate. In Spring 2013, Louisville Public Media announced the establishment of KyCIR. Our first investigation, which uncovered a sexual harassment scandal involving a prominent state legislator, was published in Fall 2013. Our website went live in March 2014, and since then, we have expanded our team with passionate reporters who have earned accolades for their work. While we offer a unique perspective, we are not alone in a rapidly evolving media environment. Many news organizations are facing tough decisions, often reducing staff and cutting back on essential investigative journalism, which requires significant time and resources. At KyCIR, we believe that investigative reporting is vital, not optional. Our aim is to create in-depth stories that can influence public policy, engage the public, and provide essential context for civic issues. As a community-oriented organization, our work is supported and funded by the local community.
