On the Road With KZSC, Playlistsby DJ BugsThis playlist is inspired by my (somehow) 12-hour roadtrip from Santa Cruz to LA. I had a 3 hour detour on the 1 (there was a rock slide near Big Sur and I had to turn back). However, Carmel was beautiful. I had never been before. I went to a little hole-in-the-wall stationary shop before stopping at Carmel River State Beach. I put a handful of sand into my purse… not sure if that’s illegal or not.

The second to last city on the My Anti-Aircraft Friend tour. Berkeley, my first concert in the Bay Area. What better concert to be at than at a Julie concert? A Los Angeles trio consisting of Alexandria Elizabeth on vocals/bass, Keyan Pourzand on guitar/vocals, and Dillon Lee on drums. My Anti-Aircraft Friend being their debut album, where they continue to explore the dynamics of their art as a band.

This past Saturday, Ian George performed at Blue House Stage, a local venue in Scotts Valley. My friend Emma and I drove just 15 minutes on the 17 and arrived at a winding road that led into mountains. We passed beautiful homes and farmland amongst redwoods until we approached a small gathering of young boys in the street. “Excuse me!” Two of them hollered at us and motioned to roll down the window.

Music NewsKZSC LibrarianQueen Jessica released her latest album “Here in the Pitch” last Friday. To sum it up, this album is 9 tracks and 27 minutes of heaven. Her songs are dreamy as always, but for the first time, she includes other instruments besides her and a guitar. We get some light drums and synth, bass, and bongos. This band expansion doesn’t necessarily create a bigger sound, but rather enhances the haziness and fullness that we’ve always gotten from Pratt’s raw, home recordings.

Music News, Record Reviews Last week my brother sent me a text telling me to give this new album SCRAPYARD a listen. Although I was originally intrigued upon receiving the message, I was immediately captivated upon playing the opening of this track “DUSTCLUSTER” featuring this unique and catchy beat that captures such an interesting sound that meshes perfectly with his raw and simplistic lyrics. This opener set up positive expectations for the album and a precedent for what is next to come.

Music News, Record Reviews, Staff PostsKZSC LibrarianBright Future (March 2024) was recorded directly to tape by Adrianne and producer Philip Weinrobe (who also produced “Songs and Instrumentals”). The barebones recording technique is reminiscent of the likes of Jessica Pratt and Sibylle Baier, and seems to be the natural next sound for Lenker. She prioritizes the “heart” and intention of the music, rather than the typical quality of the audio. Yet, I think those factors feed into each other.

When we spoke, the girls had just finished their Colorado shows and were on route to the desert, for Flagstaff Arizona, which wasn’t even the halfway point of their tour. They still had to circle back through California and up into the Midwest.
