In a June 19 update, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) said dead timber, west winds and low humidity with critically low fuel moistures have made safe and effective firefighting efforts challenging. Winds have continued to spread the fire, which has moved north into Ice Creek and northeast into Aurora Creek, just west of Borealis Peak.

By MIKE MALTAIS Ward Media Staff ReporterCHELAN – Members of the Chelan schools’ HOPE Squad delivered a slide show presentation to the June 9 meeting of the board of Lake Chelan School District (LCSD). HOPE Squad is a school-based peer-to-peer suicide prevention program. HOPE Squad has been in Chelan schools for four years and is currently comprised of 33 student members, 13 from high school and 20 from middle school. They are peer-selected for being confidential, easy to talk with, and supportive.

By MIKE MALTAIS Ward Media Staff ReporterCHELAN – The Lakeside Park Renovation project was moved back to the drawing board by unanimous vote of the June 10 city council after bids received for the work were well in excess of the $1,389,790 the city budgeted for the project. The project was publicly advertised on April 9 and 16 in the Mirror. Public works hosted a pre-bid meeting on site at Lakeside Park on May 1, where five contractors attended.

The nearly $4 million multi-use pedestrian and bicycle route from Woodin/Webster to Water Street contract was awarded to low bidder, KRCI, at the June 4 council workshop. That event conveniently dovetailed with the city’s hiring of an internal CPM.
