In order to better estimate the number of sage grouse harvested by hunters each year, the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission will consider authorizing a new, free hunting permit at its June meeting. If approved, the permit would be required for all sage grouse hunters. According to Brian Wakeling, Game Management Bureau chief for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the new license would give wildlife managers a better handle on the impacts of hunting on sage grouse populations.

Before approving a repaving project at city hall at its regular meeting Monday evening, the Lewistown City Commission discussed potential changes to enforcement of city ordinances during a Committee of the Whole. City Manager Holly Phelps told commissioners that City Attorney Tyler West is working on drafts of three ordinances — one on vicious dogs, one on dogs at large, and one on parking.

President Trump’s spate of tariffs has at least some local wheat growers feeling a bit nervous. With over 80% of Montana’s wheat sold to other countries, Central Montana growers are watching tariffs, reciprocal tariffs and other trade policies closely. Moore School will undergo extensive renovations after voters narrowly approved $12.4 million in bond funding for the district during Tuesday’s elections. Elsewhere in Central Montana, voters in Denton approved a $300,000 elementary bond for heating improvements at the school, while Grass Range and Winnett each passed levies. “I’m incredibly excited for our kids and staff. This is a huge deal,” said Moore School Superintendent Justin Barnes.

Lewistown Public Schools’ proposed $96,000 elementary levy fell short at the ballot box during the May 6 school elections, with voters rejecting the measure by a margin of 1,171 “yes” votes to 1,352 “no” votes, according to unofficial election counts from the Fergus County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. Voters also chose Carson Sweeney for a one-year term on the LPS Board of Trustees by a wide margin. Sweeney received 1,645 votes compared to Logan Smith’s 625 votes.
