    In order to better estimate the number of sage grouse harvested by hunters each year, the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission will consider authorizing a new, free hunting permit at its June meeting. If approved, the permit would be required for all sage grouse hunters. According to Brian Wakeling, Game Management Bureau chief for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the new license would give wildlife managers a better handle on the impacts of hunting on sage grouse populations.

    Despite declaring property tax relief to be “Job One” for the 2025 legislative session, it took state legislators until the very last day of the session to do it, and required two separate bills to pull it off last week. Combined, the two bills shift who pays property tax by lowering tax rates on many residential properties and long-term rentals while increasing tax rates on short-term rentals, second homes and larger commercial and industrial properties.
