Long Island Advance
The Long Island Advance, initially named The Advance, launched on September 1, 1871, during Ulysses S. Grant's presidency. At that time, the paper was priced at just 5 cents. Due to a post-war economic downturn, the founder, Timothy J. Dyson, who had a background as a printer and newspaper writer from Brooklyn, often accepted payment for ads and subscriptions in the form of goods and trade items.
