Idaho Power reported a power outage stretching from rural Malheur County east to Pocatello, Idaho. The company reported a total of 4,899 customers (not people) is impacted. The outage map shows the outage hitting Ontario, Vale and Nyssa.

The Ontario High School softball team hosted Pendleton in a doubleheader on Thursday, May 1, at the Ore-Ida Heinz Complex on the Treasure Valley Community College. The Tigers softball team fell 15-0 in the first game and 18-0 in the second. The 4A Ontario softball squad will host La Grande (21-0 and 8-0) on Wednesday, May 7, in league play at the Ore-Ida Heinz Complex. Ontario is 0-14 overall and 0-8 in league action. News tip? Nyssa Middle School students take state vocabulary title

Nyssa Middle School students made history by earning the school’s first-ever state title in the 2025 Vocabulary Bowl. According to the online learning platform Vocabulary.com, Nyssa students mastered nearly 1,700 words during the spring competition. The season runs from February through March, according to Vocabulary.com’s website.

County cuts spending in new budget as federal money in doubt

Malheur County is tightening its spending for the year ahead, adjusting to the possible loss in millions in federal funding. The Malheur County Budget Committee recently approved a spending plan for the next budget year, which starts July 1. The budget needs formal approval now by the Malheur County Court but county commissioners are part of the budget committee so the approval is expected.
Voters get ballots to fill local board seats

Now, it’s up to Malheur County voters to settle who will sit on local boards for school, recreation and fire districts. According to Malheur County Clerk Gayle Trotter, ballots went out to registered voters on Wednesday, April 30, with Election Day on May 20. She said ballots typically start to arrive within three to five days. Trotter said those not seeing a ballot by Monday, May 12, should contact her office.
Nyssa chamber gets new leaders, Thunderegg Days future unclear

The Nyssa Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture has announced new leaders and board members and set a community meeting to discuss its future. McKenna Wagstaff was elected president, James Bunn, vice president; Melissa Carnahan, second vice president; Charee Wilson, treasurer; and Briana Berdowski, secretary. Elected to the board at an April 25 meet were Bob Quick, Deanna Tucker, Linda Aman and Woneta Mendive.
