Upgrades to the Japanese Garden at the Four Rivers Cultural Center began this month, with the most exciting part of the work accomplished by Ogata Kai volunteers from Japan. Japanese Garden volunteer curator Mike Miller submitted a design proposal to the Ogata Kai group, who pick a project in the United States each year and travel at their own expense to work on it. Funding for the project needs to be provided by the applicant.

Malheur County officials appear to be inching closer to inking a deal to sell the county’s unfinished Treasure Valley Reload Center and undeveloped industrial park to a national railroad company. With the 120-day due diligence period set to end next week, the Malheur County Development Corp. board is set to meet on Monday, April 21, in a special meeting to sign off on a new budget.

The Vale High School robotics team is heading to Texas to compete at a world competition after recently taking second at the state tournament. The team of four students developed a sophisticated robot that impressed judges at the state competition held last month at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, according to Jim Schaffeld, robotics club advisor and welding teacher.

Malheur County’s economic development board approved a $250,000 loan to help Valley Family Health Care build two new pharmacies and renovate two others by next January. Ken Hart, chief executive of Valley Family Health Care, told the Eastern Oregon Border Board on Monday, April 7, that the pharmacy expansion to preserve access to reduced prices to drug prices through a federal drug program.
