Good evening! —Today, I had the dubious honor of interviewing Senator Angus King of Maine — one of the few people in Washington who still seems burdened by a conscience. Our conversation, equal parts bleak and bracing, revolved around the slow-motion demolition derby otherwise known as American democracy. King, an Independent who caucuses with Democrats, recently invoked Sen. Margaret Chase Smith’s legendary 1950 “Declaration of Conscience” speech on the Senate floor.
