Today, I wanted to focus in on the blue hat, which has to do with organization and planning. This particular hat is one that I wear on every team meeting and you should too. What Is A Hat? A “hat” is not a physical piece of clothing, but a state of mind. It is a tool that can be used to push the boundaries of thinking and help you grow as a group and as leaders.

I met Jake (name changed to protect the innocent) at one of our business workshops recently. He had been in business for almost ten years now, and was looking to scale his business and gain more independence. When I asked him about his business, his eyes lit up with excitement as he talked about his product line, his team back home and the growth potential that he had laid out before him. He was eager to keep the momentum going.

In the new year focus on working on more high value tasks and avoiding putting out “fires” that come up along the way. To produce at your best, you need interruption free chunks of time in which to get valuable work done. Understand that email is addictive, and when you answer one email you will likely get sucked into answering more and more. Guard your time wisely and stop checking your email every few minutes throughout the day. At the core of micromanagement is a lack of trust.

I really enjoy creating action plans. My inner-nerd gets really excited over the possibilities of a new year or quarter. There are so many opportunities for growth and development, and I love laying it all out on paper and then working towards those goals over the coming quarter.
