Mount Vernon girls’ soccer ran into a bigger, meaner version of themselves, and lost a Class 2A regional semifinal to No. 10 North Scott, 4-0, on Wednesday, May 28. “I think we’re an aggressive team, and North Scott liked to be even more aggressive,” Mount Vernon coach Angie Knies said. “They outbodied us and having our strong players getting bodied off the ball was hard. It was a rivalry doubleheader, and a WaMaC twinbill, to boot. On Thursday, May 29, Mount Vernon swept the Spartans 10-6 and 9-8 in Solon. “Solon is always going to bring their best against us,” Mount Vernon coach Robin Brand said. “We looked really good. We hit the ball well and ran the bases well. The kids stayed calm and collected and stayed fired up.”In the first game the Mustangs had 16 hits. Lisbon girls’ golf brought home a trophy from the Class 3A State Meet. “Anytime you come home with hardware, I would chalk it up as a successful season,” Lisbon coach Andy Kahl said. The Lions finished seventh in a loaded state field on Thursday and Friday at Saddleback Golf Course in Solon. Gilbert won the title, scoring 611 over 36 holes. Twin sisters Ava and Ella Lohrback finished 1-2 in the individual race, both finishing under par. “It was crazy,” senior Eryn Jackson said.

The first big showdown for the Lisbon softball team didn’t go their way. No. 3 (2A) Lisbon dropped a pair of close ones at No. 8 (1A) North Linn on Thursday, May 29. Lisbon baseball opened the season with two big wins over Prince of Peace on Monday, May 19, at Nelson Corp Field in Clinton. The Lions won 19-1 and 15-5, both in five innings. Ian Whittenbaugh won the first game, giving up three hits and striking out seven. Ethan Stone won the nightcap, giving up five hits and striking out seven. In the 19-1 win, the Lions had nine hits.

Mount Vernon ran a blazing fast 4×800, but finished second in 7 minutes, 54.16 seconds. Pella won the 3A relay in 7:53.08. The foursome of Seamus O’Connor, Chasen Caskey, Grady Olberding and Dawson Scheil helped score most of the 13 team points that placed Mount Vernon in 17th in 3A last weekend at the State Meet in Des Moines. The distance medley of Colin Bentley, Logan Stanerson, Holden Hlavacek, and Olberding finished in sixth, and Olberding was seventh in the 1,600.

When you win three straight state track titles, each one is going to be a little different. The Lisbon boys’ track team used its powerhouse sprints, and sophomore 800 sensation to win a Class 1A State Meet crown for the third consecutive year. Lisbon scored 54 points to beat Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center (ACGC) by 10 points. There could have been panic after a dropped baton in the sprint medley Saturday morning that disqualified the Lions from an event they came in with the second-best time in 1A.
