Mount Vernon girls’ soccer ran into a bigger, meaner version of themselves, and lost a Class 2A regional semifinal to No. 10 North Scott, 4-0, on Wednesday, May 28. “I think we’re an aggressive team, and North Scott liked to be even more aggressive,” Mount Vernon coach Angie Knies said. “They outbodied us and having our strong players getting bodied off the ball was hard. We haven’t dealt with that.”The Mustangs kept it close at half, 1-0, but the Lancers broke it open over the final 40 minutes.

It was a rivalry doubleheader, and a WaMaC twinbill, to boot. On Thursday, May 29, Mount Vernon swept the Spartans 10-6 and 9-8 in Solon. “Solon is always going to bring their best against us,” Mount Vernon coach Robin Brand said. “We looked really good. We hit the ball well and ran the bases well. The kids stayed calm and collected and stayed fired up.”In the first game the Mustangs had 16 hits. Freshman Sophia Patten hit a double and a home run with two RBIs. Senior Libby Dix added a double.

Lisbon girls’ golf brought home a trophy from the Class 3A State Meet. “Anytime you come home with hardware, I would chalk it up as a successful season,” Lisbon coach Andy Kahl said. The Lions finished seventh in a loaded state field on Thursday and Friday at Saddleback Golf Course in Solon. Gilbert won the title, scoring 611 over 36 holes. Twin sisters Ava and Ella Lohrback finished 1-2 in the individual race, both finishing under par. “It was crazy,” senior Eryn Jackson said.

The first big showdown for the Lisbon softball team didn’t go their way. No. 3 (2A) Lisbon dropped a pair of close ones at No. 8 (1A) North Linn on Thursday, May 29.
