Nevada Journal

Nevada Journal

The Nevada Journal was a newspaper based in Nevada City, California. It holds the distinction of being the first newspaper in Nevada County and one of the earliest newspapers published in the mountainous regions of California. Launched by Warren Baxter Ewer, the inaugural issue came out on either April 19 or 21, 1851, under the control of the Whig Party. In its first decade, the paper saw various editors including W.B. Ewer (1851), Henry "Harry" A. DeCourcey and Aaron A. Sargent (1852-1855), E.G. Waite (1855-1856), A.A. Sargent (1856), and B. Bireley (1859-1861). After Ewer, the publication changed hands among several publishers: Alban & DeCourcey with A.A. Sargent (1852), Sargent & Budd with E.R. Budd (1854), N.P. Brown & Co. (1855), and others until it ultimately suspended operations in 1861. However, it was brought back to life shortly afterwards and continued for an additional year and a half.
