    This past week was a busy one for high school male athletes from the Des Moines metro area. Competition in boys track, soccer and tennis continued to heat up during the second full week of action for those sports. Boys golf saw its first full week of action. There were several standout individual performances from male athletes in all four spring sports during the week. Here are the Des Moines Register's male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of April 6-12.

    This past week saw a ton of female high school sporting events take place featuring athletes and teams from the Des Moines metro area. The competition in girls track, soccer and tennis was outstanding during the second full week of those sports. Girls golf saw got into full swing during the week as well. There were several standout individual performances from female athletes in all four spring sports during the week.

    This past week saw the Ames girls soccer team tie Class 3A No. 3 Waukee (1-1) and pick up victories over Mason City (1-0) and Fort Dodge. Gilbert, ranked No. 6 in 1A, defeated Ballard (4-0) and tied 3A No. 13 Southeast Polk (0-0), and Nevada, No. 7 in 1A, defeated Central Iowa United (12-0) and 2A No. 14 Bondurant-Farrar (5-1). In girls track and field, Ames took fifth at the Ankeny girls quadrangular meet on April 8 and eighth at the Van Meter Early Bird meet in April 10.

    This past week was a busy one in high school spring sports for Ames-area male athletes. In boys track and field, Ames hosted the Hi Covey Invitational and Gilbert the Gilbert Invitational on April 8. Nevada held the Nevada Invitational on April 10. The Ballard boys tennis team placed first during its home triangular with Nevada and North Polk on April 10 at Huxley and Ames scored 11-0 wins over Ottumwa and Des Moines North, while also falling to Johnston, 8-3.

    There is a different feel to the Ames girls soccer team in 2025. The Little Cyclones have faced two of the top three teams and three total ranked teams in Class 3A during their first five games. They are 2-2-1 during that stretch, but they look much better than their record indicates. Ames suffered tight 1-0 losses to No. 2 West Des Moines Valley and No. 12 Urbandale. They tied No. 3 Waukee in Ames on Thursday, 1-1.
