Nearly touching the ceiling, at twenty-six feet tall, Nick Cave’s “Amalgam (Origin)” is a colossal self-portrait. In the center of the room at the new Jack Shainman Gallery in New York, a newly renovated Beaux-Arts bank with marble floors and columns, the bronze figure seems to belong in the space. There is often an immediate moment of awe when experiencing a work of art larger than yourself.
