Camlough Lake is set for “full delivery” of a major water activity development supported by £2.8m of UK Levelling Up funds. Plans for the Camlough Lake Recreational Hub were launched in 2024, with outdoor activities a key part of the designs. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s (NMDDC) strategy, policy and resources committee agreed to appoint a contractor and signed off a budget on 12 June.

A collective unionist attempt to ‘call in’ a council’s bi-lingual sign strategy has failed to gather support amid concerns of “persistent inequality”. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) recently approved joint Irish and English gateway signs for almost 90 communities in its authority. In opposition the DUP walked out of the chamber and stepped away from the equality and good relations committee after six years of discussions on bi-lingual signs resulted in non-agreement.

An environmental report which potentially led to the collapse of the Mourne Gateway project was the subject of a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) has finally confirmed the confidential status of the report to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) a month after a media query. It can now be revealed that details in the secret document for the £44m tourism plan had “reinforced “significant project concerns” to the landowners, the National Trust.

Division over new bi-lingual town signs has caused a chamber row at this week's Strategy, Policy and Resources committee meeting. Following a debate over the Council's bi-lingual policy, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) will now provide Irish and English signage that will affect 89 settlements in the local authority map, according to a committee report.
