1 “You know, I’ve always figured the waiting is what I get paid for. The acting I do free,” Edward G. Robinson once said. The three characters in “The Shark Is Broken” — currently being presented by George Street Playhouse at The New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, with direction by Peter Flynn — might agree. They are film actors, and the 2019 play, co-written by Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon, is devoted, almost entirely, to scenes in which they wait, together, for the filming to begin.

The Who will bring The Song Is Over Tour to Newark and Atlantic City

2 I wouldn’t blame you if you don’t believe it — this is a band that has claimed to have presented farewell tours before — but The Who say their upcoming North American tour will be their last. It is called their The Song Is Over North America Farewell Tour, and it will come to The Prudential Center in Newark on Aug. 19, and Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Aug. 23. Other area stops include The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Aug.
Thinking outside the box, Maplewood Film Society creates cinematic events

2 We lost another movie house. On April 30, part of the ceiling of the historic Cranford Theater collapsed. There was no audience inside the affected auditorium at the time — luckily — but the entire building had to be evacuated. It remains shuttered while the damage is assessed. The 99-year-old picture house plans to reopen — its owners specialize in revitalizing vintage theaters. But it’s hard not to see this as one more nail in the coffin of local movie-going.

2 Dave Davies of The Kinks will sign copies of his 2022 book “Living on a Thin Line: The Autobiography,” June 1 at 11 a.m. at the Bookends bookstore in Ridgewood. Attendees will need a book for entry; visit book-ends.org. Davies, who now lives in Bergen County, formed The Kinks with his brother Ray (plus drummer Mick Avory and bassist Pete Quaife) in London, in 1963.

MUSIC• Kendrick Lamar and SZA (who grew up in Maplewood) will bring their co-headlining Grand National Tour to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, May 8-9 at 7 p.m. The tour, which began on April 19 in Minneapolis, has featured them presenting alternating mini-sets on their own, with collaborative numbers at various points in the show.

1 Guitarist Stéphane Wrembel will present the 2025 edition of his Django à Gogo Music Festival and Music Camp — an annual event since 2003, featuring music in the style of the great Romani-French guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt — May 6-11. Joining Wrembel as instructors and concert performers will be Mozes Rosenberg, David Gastine, Antoine Boyer, Frank Anastasio, Sam Farthing, Simba Baumgartner and Yeore Kim.

(Single tickets will go on sale on Aug. 1.)The season tickets are good for four shows: “Mrs. Doubtfire,” Nov. 1-2; “Kinky Boots,” Feb. 27-March 1; “Stereophonic,” March 27-29; and Meredith Willson’s classic “The Music Man,” May 8-10, 2026.
