Northeast Times
The Northeast Times is a newspaper based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, focusing on the Northeast Philadelphia area. It was acquired in 1999 by Philadelphia Newspapers, which is also the parent company of The Philadelphia Inquirer. In 2010, the Times changed hands again when Philadelphia Media Network sold it to a new company called Broad Street Media, founded by Darwin Oordt and the Richner brothers, Clifford and Stuart. In 2016, Richard Donnelly took over Broad Street Media and created the Newspaper Media Group.

State Sen. Joe Picozzi spoke at last week’s Holme Circle Civic Association meeting. A day earlier, Picozzi visited St. Jerome Elementary School, the 20th school of 56 in the 5th Senatorial District that he’s visited since taking office in January. Picozzi said he is working on legislation to empower police and neighbors to end homeless encampments and to target predatory wreck chasers who charge high rates to tow vehicles involved in accidents.

The Greater Bustleton Civic League last week honored five local youths with Student Achievement Awards. GBCL president Jack O’Hara presented the students with framed certificates and $100 for outstanding achievement in community service and volunteerism. The winners were nominated by their schools.

Michael J. Crescenz Medal of Honor Rising Sun VFW Post 2819, 6850 Martins Mill Road, last week held its annual Memorial Day ceremony. Steve, Chris and Joe Crescenz represented their brother, a Cardinal Dougherty graduate who was the only Philadelphian to earn the Medal of Honor for his heroics in Vietnam. The event also included a benediction by chaplain Mike Suermann and a performance of the national anthem by Luke Jardel and Michael Molloy.

The Philadelphia Protestant Home last week observed Memorial Day, with director of community relations Bill Conaway serving as emcee. Conaway asked all veterans to stand for a round of applause and explained the meaning of the table set for one for Prisoners of War and Missing in Action. Boy Scouts of America Troop 160 Scoutmaster Walt MacBride read Memorial Day messages by Presidents Donald Trump and George W. Bush.

St. Martin of Tours Elementary School recently held a Prayer-A-Thon, with students and staff praying the rosary and paying tribute to veterans and first responders. The event took place on May 23, the start of Memorial Day weekend. In the morning, a couple of grades at a time walked around the school praying the rosary. In the afternoon, there was a ceremony in the schoolyard, followed by another walk around the parish perimeter.
