Christine (Hepp) Conti is a 1992 graduate of St. Martin of Tours Elementary School and, after attending Little Flower High School and Chestnut Hill College, has been teaching at SMT since 2000. “This place is my home and has been my whole life,” said Conti, who grew up on Akron Street and was also married at the church. Rick Conti, Christine’s husband, is a fourth-grade teacher at St. Martin’s and director of the parish music program.

The Republican City Committee is making an independent expenditure to have GOP voters write in Pat Dugan for district attorney. Dugan is challenging District Attorney Larry Krasner in the May 20 Democratic primary. No Republican filed to run for the office. Republicans need 1,000 write-ins for a specific candidate to be able to have a name on the ballot in November.
Judicial candidates attend Bustleton forum

Judicial candidates gathered Wednesday night for a forum at Bustleton Memorial American Legion Post 810, at 9151 Old Newtown Road. Fox Chase resident Melissa Robbins hosted the forum, asking yes-or-no questions for all candidates and other questions directed at specific candidates. All candidates for Common Pleas and Municipal Court in the May 20 primary were invited. There are 10 candidates for nine openings on Common Pleas Court and five candidates for three openings on Municipal Court.

A group of activists from the Philadelphia Protestant Home recently got together for an event titled “Standing Up for Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare.”While most of the 40-plus participants are PPH residents, the Protestant Home did not sponsor the rally. Residents, many using walkers, marched out of the PPH main entrance and joined supporters on the 700 block of Levick St. to hold handmade signs in support of the federally funded social programs.

St. Hubert students creating some fine art

St. Hubert’s advanced-placement art students displayed selected pieces of their work at an exhibit at Holy Family from April 24 to May 1. The students in teacher Donna Cratin’s AP Studio Art class each produced a thematic body of work consisting of more than 10 pieces. They each selected a couple of pieces to be showcased at Holy Family’s Art Gallery, in the Education and Technology Center. “I’m extremely proud of them,” Cratin said.

Gail Bober loves her twice-a-month visits to KleinLife, where she leads a Healthy Lives Community Group of people 60-plus. “It gives people a sense of connection, community and shared experiences,” she said. Bober represents Connectedly, a Manayunk-based nonprofit that seeks to reduce social isolation and improve the well-being of older adults. The nonprofit was founded 40 years ago as the Supportive Older Women’s Network, and became known last year as Connectedly.

The third annual Matthew Coll Gift of Life Games took place recently at Tacony Academy Charter High School. Matthew Coll, of Fox Chase, graduated from Tacony Academy in 2018 and was a member of the baseball team. He died in February 2022, two weeks after being involved as a passenger in a car accident at Verree Road and Bloomfield Avenue. Matthew was an organ donor, and his kidneys and liver were donated to people in need while his lungs, brain and tissue went to research.

Like many folks who grew up in the Northeast, Dan McMeans recalls plenty of good times. “I have a lot of fond memories of Lawndale,” he said. McMeans grew up at 307 Magee Ave. after living for a few years in Overbrook. In the 1970s, from ages 13-18, he and a group of friends hung out on the steps of a neighbor’s house at Oakley Street and Magee Avenue. “We were there faithfully every single night,” he said.

His opponent in the Democratic primary, Pat Dugan, was represented by Tom Lally. City Controller Christy Brady, who is unopposed in the Democratic primary, spoke of her office’s speeding up pay for election workers. Her Republican opponent is Ari Patrinos. Democratic City Committee-endorsed judicial candidates were invited.
