    Funding The Early Years Alliance has expressed concerns about the longterm viability of the early entitlement expansion, as applications for the next phase open today (12 May). Families of eligible children who will be at least nine months old by September can now apply to access up to 30 hours of funded childcare a week, which the government says will save them up to £7,500 every year per child.

    The government has launched a consultation on how it can help nurseries make better use of outdoor space for play and learning. The consultation will look at whether to allow early years providers to include high-quality, accessible and safe outdoor space in meeting government requirements on how many children settings can take on at any one time. Currently the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework only recognises indoor space under these requirements.

    Funding The local government ombudsman has told Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council to reimburse a parent who complained a nursery was charging mandatory “top-up fees”. In a report published this week the ombudsman calls for the council to reimburse the parent within one month for any “general extras” fees he has paid the nursery to date. It also recommends the council pay the parent £200 to compensate for his time and trouble in bringing the complaint.
