Yankee fans did not want to hear owner Hal Steinbrenner say it will be difficult to compete with spending habits of the World Series champion Dodgers. Then again this is a different era when the late George Steinbrenner would continue to spend as the Yankees were known as “The Evil Empire.”But that was George and this is Hal. Different philosophy or era?

Something was different at the Rose Hill Gym Sunday afternoon when the Fordham Rams opposed Duquesne. Fordham head coach Keith Urgo wasn’t on the sidelines serving the second of a four-game suspension due to recruiting violations. And the Rams in desperate need of a Atlantic-10 Conference win got their first, 65-63, when Josh Rivera hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left. The Rams got their first conference win in seven games, much needed and without their coach.

The Jets have their coach and now their GM. Darren Mougey wasn’t the big name the Jets’ fans might have expected to pair with new coach Aaron Glenn. But the 39-year-old has been Denver’s assistant GM , and he had his second interview in Florham Park last Thursday. Mougey was part of the Broncos’ Super Bowl team in 2015, and he helped them get back to the playoffs this season. Denver faced a league-high $89 million in dead money on the salary cap.

Aaron Glenn is beginning to settle in as the new Jets’ head coach. He’ll meet the media Monday, and some of his staff should be revealed. Although it appears ex-Cardinals head coach and recent ex-49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks has been linked as Glenn’s DC, former Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak would fill the same role, and longtime special team guru Mike Westhoff has been rumored to be heading back to the Jets’ sidelines.

Carlos Beltran received 70.3 percent among vote getters in the Baseball Hall of Fame voting for the class of 2025 among 394 ballots cast. That was fourth behind Billy Wagner, CC Sabathia, and Ichiro Suzuki. Though it’s a cinch that Beltran will reach the threshold next January when the 2026 class is announced. I am not eligible to vote in this esteemed process as a non member of the Baseball Writers of America, though if I had the privilege Beltran would have another vote.
