    University High School Athletic officials announced Friday that former Beckman coach John Goins has been named new varsity boys basketball coach. Goins was head coach at Beckman from 2016 to 2022. Before that, Goins was assistant coach from 2007 to 2016. He led the Patriots to their first league championship in school history and led Beckman teams to the second round of the CIF playoffs in three of the six seasons. Goins resigned in March 2022 to spend more time with his family.

Paul Grossman notched his first complete game to earn the win and also scored the game-winning run for the Timberwolves (9-13-1, 5-5). Joseph Harper and Colin Carlson led the hitting attack. Kennedy High School’s baseball team improved its chances of reaching the CIF playoffs, defeating Segerstrom 5-2 in a Golden West League game Friday afternoon at Segerstrom. The teams were scheduled to meet Thursday, but that game was cancelled on the same day that Segerstrom’s baseball program was put on probation until next February for several CIF violations.

Segerstrom High School’s baseball team, one day after the program was put on probation for several CIF violations until February 2026, will face Kennedy Friday, April 18 in a Golden West League game at Segerstrom. Kennedy Coach Tom Monahan told OC Sports Zone earlier Friday that it was up to Segerstrom officials if the game would be played. He confirmed later that the game was on but said he could not comment on Segerstrom’s probation.

    Segerstrom High School’s baseball team was placed on probationary status due to violation of CIF by-laws and will be ineligible for the CIF playoffs, CIF officials said Thursday in a release. The probation is effective immediately and runs through Feb. 16, 2026. In additon, Segerstrom, which was 12-7 overall and atop the Golden West League standings with a 5-2 record will forfeit all of its wins this season.
