Oceana

Oceana

Oceana was founded by several prominent foundations, including The Pew Charitable Trusts, Oak Foundation, Marisla Foundation (previously known as Homeland Foundation), Sandler Foundation, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. They came together after a 1999 study revealed that only a tiny fraction, less than 0.5 percent, of the funding allocated by environmental nonprofits in the U.S. was directed towards ocean protection. Recognizing the absence of a dedicated organization focused on global ocean conservation, the founders established Oceana. This international group is committed entirely to the health of the oceans, aiming to create tangible improvements through targeted, science-driven policy initiatives that have clear deadlines and specific objectives.
