Orthoptists should be allowed to perform eye examinations to ease ophthalmology waiting lists, the British and Irish Orthoptic Society (BIOS) has said. BIOS is urging the General Optical Council (GOC) to review regulations on who can perform a sight test and prescribe glasses, allowing orthoptists to be named within the Opticians Act.

The call comes after a new report found that the cost of eye care is deterring the public from visiting optometry practices. Achieving better outcomes for glaucoma patients with cataracts was the theme of Specsavers and Glaucoma UKs' Main Stage lecture on the Sunday of 100% Optical (2 March). Giles Edmonds, clinical services director at Specsavers, and Paul Morris, the multiple's director of professional advancement, were joined by consultant ophthalmic surgeon Nishani Amerasinghe for the presentation. Amerasinghe is a former president of the UK and Éire Glaucoma Society.

More than 200 people experiencing homelessness have received free glasses as part of a year-long Specsavers and Vision Care for Homeless People (VCHP) pilot. The pilot saw spectacles dispensed in 16 homeless centres, in York, Scarborough, Huddersfield, Bradford, Wakefield, Bridlington, and Leeds. In total, 271 people received eye care, with 231 benefiting from new glasses. The work was carried out by optometrists from Specsavers' Bradford and York Home Visits teams.
